Preparing Your Plumbing System for Vacation: A Homeowner’s Checklist

Nothing spoils a relaxing holiday like returning home to a flooded basement, a moldy bathroom, or a high energy bill.

Before you grab your beach towel and hit the road, taking time to properly prepare your plumbing system for vacation can help you avoid costly emergencies and unnecessary stress.

This checklist is your go-to guide for protecting your home’s plumbing, heating, and cooling systems while you’re away — and when you’re ready, PGA Inc. is just a call away for expert maintenance and peace of mind.

Shut Off the Main Water Supply

Before leaving for your vacation, one of the most effective ways to prevent water damage is to turn off the main water valve. This simple task significantly reduces the risk of leaks, pipe bursts, and flooding while no one is home. Even a small leak can cause extensive damage, especially if it goes unnoticed for days or weeks.

If shutting off the entire water supply isn’t practical — maybe you have an automatic sprinkler system or a house sitter — consider turning off valves to individual appliances like your washing machine, dishwasher, and hot tub.

Inspect for Leaks and Damaged Plumbing Fixtures

Take a quick tour of your home and inspect plumbing fixtures in the kitchen, bathroom, basement, and laundry room. Check for signs of water leaks around sinks, toilets, shower heads, and underneath cabinets.

Look for drips, puddles, mildew, or water stains. These signs indicate a loose connection or worn-out hose that could worsen in your absence. Tighten fittings and call our Wausau plumbers to replace damaged pipes or hoses as needed.

Also, test your toilet’s flush to ensure it’s working properly and that the water isn’t running continuously, which wastes water and adds to your utility bill.

Empty and Clean Drains

Clogged or slow drains are a recipe for disaster while you’re on vacation. Run water in all sinks and showers to check drainage. If the flow is sluggish, now’s the time to take action.

Avoid using harsh chemical drain cleaners. Instead, opt for a safer option like a mix of vinegar and baking soda to clear minor clogs and freshen up your drains. This way, you won’t have to deal with unpleasant odors when you get back home.

Also, pour water into unused drains, like in your basement or guest bathroom, to fill the traps and prevent sewer gases from creeping into your home.

Prep Your Sump Pump and Basement

If your home has a basement sump pump, it’s critical to test it before heading out. Pour water into the sump pit to see if the pump activates and drains the water properly. This is especially important if your area is prone to heavy rainfall. A malfunctioning sump pump can lead to a flooded basement, water damage, mold, and mildew. If your sump pump has a battery backup system, check that it’s fully charged and functional.

Consider installing a water leak detection device or alarm in the basement for added security. PGA Inc. can assist with testing and replacing sump pumps or backup systems to ensure you’re fully protected while you’re on holiday.

Adjust Thermostat and AC Settings

Many homeowners forget about their thermostat when heading out on vacation, but it plays a major role in preventing unnecessary energy use. In the summer, raise the air conditioning temperature to around 78°F to save energy without compromising indoor air quality. And if you’re leaving for vacation in the winter, set your thermostat to at least 55°F to keep the heat circulating and reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

If you have a smart thermostat, use vacation mode settings to automatically regulate temperature and monitor performance remotely. And don’t forget to check that your HVAC system’s filters are clean so that the airflow remains consistent.

Final Checklist Before You Leave

Use this quick checklist to double-check everything before you grab your suitcase:

  • Shut off the main water valve (or individual valves)
  • Clean drains with vinegar and water for odor control
  • Test sump pump for proper operation
  • Set thermostat to safe energy-efficient temperature
  • Turn off or unplug dishwasher and washing machine
  • Detach and store garden hoses
  • Empty or set water heater to vacation mode
  • Flush toilets and pour water in unused drains
  • Stock up on toilet paper for when you return!

If you’re not confident handling these tasks yourself or notice anything unusual, like low water pressure, strange odors, or frequent pump noises, contact your trusted plumber at PGA Inc.
